Job description
We are looking for an exceptional communications professional to join the HM Prison and Probation (HMPPS) communications team in the Ministry of Justice. You will manage a creative team to deliver internal communications and contribute to wider team initiatives and campaigns.
Working to the Head of Campaigns and Content this role works to articulate the voice of HMPPS through consistent and clear editorial guidance, effective storytelling, planning and message management.
The role has two primary functions; to manage the HMPPS intranet and to help oversee the planning and delivery of our central staff-facing campaigns.
As editor-in-chief, the role is responsible for ensuring all information and content is brilliantly written in plain English, and explain our vision, values and objectives. You will also be responsible for working with teams from across the business to support their intranet content requests.
You will lead a team of editorial and content creators that together help bring the work of HMPPS alive and manage the intranet on a day-to-day basis.
This is a non-operational role, based nationally as part of the HMPPS Communications Group within the Ministry of Justice Communication Team, reporting to the Head of Content and Campaigns.
Following completion of a six-month probationary period, the post-holder will have a small team of direct reports.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading and managing the content team to ensure the HMPPS Intranet is updated daily with key messages and stories
- Planning and managing a publishing schedule for the platform, and engaging with internal stakeholders and the wider team to ensure their content is published in a timely manner
- Championing rigorous editorial standards and the use of plain English across the intranet platform. This includes being responsibility for managing our style guides and ensuring their implementation in all content
- Leading a clear commissioning pipeline which ensures all content conforms to the golden narrative threads from the HMPPS and OneHMPPS communications strategies, and all agencies get equal billing
- Responding to feedback and learning from internal evaluation mechanisms by addressing issues in content and guidelines as necessary
- Ensuring delivery and production of corporate reports such as annual report, business plan, how HMPPS works and org charts. Including working with key directorates (e.g. finance) to ensure delivery of products to agreed expectations, timetable and budgets
- Responsible for ensuring evaluation is up to date, as well as any ad hoc high priority requests are met, and presenting insight at monthly meetings
- Working to the Head of Content and Campaigns to manage and deliver corporate campaigns.

Salary
Existing civil servants on level transfer will retain their level of pay unless this is lower than the starting salary as outlined in MoJ T&Cs.

Level of security checks required
Security Clearance (SC)
To apply for roles in MOJ you will need to confirm your employment history for at least 3 years prior to the date of application so that pre-employment checks (BPSS) can be undertaken. If you have spent significant time abroad (a total of 6 months in the past 3 years) you would be required to give a reasonable account of the reasons why.
For some roles you will be required to successfully complete National Security Vetting at Counter Terrorism (CTC), Security Clearance (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV) level as a condition of appointment. To meet CTC/SC/DV requirements you will normally need to have been resident in the UK for at least 3/5/10 years prior to the date of application (The level of checks that are required are stated in the advert).
If you do not meet the above requirements, you may still be considered if, for example:
- You've been serving overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of HM Government
- You were studying abroad
- You were living overseas with parents
In such cases you will need to be able to provide referee cover for the period(s) of residence overseas. The duration of overseas residence and the country of abode will also be taken into account.
