These roles sit within the Judicial Pay and Pensions Division which advises the Lord Chancellor on the high profile and sensitive issue of judicial remuneration, including both pay and pensions. The Lord Chancellor, departmental ministers and the judiciary take a keen interest in our work and there will be genuine opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge.

About the role

Judicial Pensions

We have established the Judicial Pension Reform Programme to oversee a number of complex and inter-dependent work streams currently underway. We are offering a role in one of our pension policy teams who have recently launched a consultation in response to high-profile litigation. You will join at an exciting time as we review the responses to our consultations and prepare to implement policy proposals through legislation. In this role you will prepare advice and briefings for ministers and senior officials, working with colleagues in other MOJ teams, and with external stakeholders including other government departments, to ensure the achievement of key project milestones. Successful candidates will be driven, keen to make a difference, and will look to take responsibility for ensuring quality outcomes.

Band C (HEO) Policy Adviser role in the Core Judicial Pensions Policy Team

The Core Judicial Pensions Policy team deals with policy issues and delivering required changes to judicial pension schemes and their underpinning regulations. In particular, the team is taking forward proposals to amend the Fee-Paid Judicial Pension Scheme to provide benefits for eligible office holders required by judgments in the O’Brien and Miller litigation. You will play an important role in the publication of the Government response to our recent consultation on our proposals and the programme to develop required amendments to the Fee-Paid Judicial Pensions Regulations. You will have the opportunity to work with internal and external stakeholders and to contribute to advice and briefings for senior officials and ministers. You will also help to field policy enquiries, including those affecting individual judges.

Criteria for Band C Role

  • Ability to carry out desk research and interpret complex information to provide advice and recommendations on policy questions.
  • Take the initiative in areas of policy responsibility.
  • Collaborate across the pension policy teams and work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing and lead policy discussion at briefings and meetings.
  • Deal with policy related correspondence effectively and efficiently.
  • Manage other aspects of a varied workload to deliver results in a timely manner.
  • Generally support achievement of the objectives of the directorate and the MOJ.

The department operates a flexible working policy where remote working is encouraged. At present, owing to Covid 19 control measures, a significant proportion of our staff are working remotely.

New entrants to the civil service will normally join at the lower end of the pay band for their grade.

Start date: We are looking for the successful candidate to start as soon as possible. The start date will be agreed with your existing employer/manager. If you are an existing civil servant please discuss this with your current manager before submitting your application.

Selection Process: Suitability for the post will be determined by a paper sift (to take place in w/c 7 September 2020) followed by interviews (in w/c 14 September 2020) following the Success Profiles framework.

Reserve list: If you apply for and meet the Band C/HEO standards, but are not successful for these roles, we may offer you an alternative policy role in the wider Judicial and Legal Services Policy Directorate.
