Background:

HM Courts and Tribunals Service is responsible for the administration of criminal courts, civil courts, family courts and tribunals in England and Wales working with an independent judiciary to provide a fair, efficient and effective justice system. Currently, HM Courts and Tribunals Service is embarking on a period of significant change which will require strong leadership in this critical role, operating in a culture of openness and honesty.

Overview:

Case progression officers work closely with Administrative Court Lawyers, members of the judiciary and court users in order to provide pro-active case management in relation to judicial reviews and various statutory appeals to ensure that cases are managed effectively and expeditiously. Case Progression officers ensure that all cases proceed to completion without delay and ensure that all parties comply with the relevant rules.

These operational roles are customer facing, requiring successful applicants to be office based to provide HMCTS services to the public. HMCTS offers a flexible working system in many of its offices, subject to business needs being met.

This role is part of the Operational Delivery Profession. Operational delivery professionals are the outward face of government, providing essential services to the public in a variety of roles. They work in many different departments and agencies across the breadth of the UK, delivering service to customers in

  • Face-to-face roles in HMCTS for example a court usher
  • Contact Centre roles in HMCTS for example call centre advisers
  • Processing roles in HMCTS for example Staff at the County Courts Money-Claims Centre and Courts and Tribunal Administration

Key Responsibilities

  • To promote and practice proactive case management to ensure that all cases, especially old cases, are progressed consistently, efficiently and in accordance with the Civil and Criminal Procedure Rules with a view to minimising delay and reducing the number of overall outstanding cases. To ensure that parties comply with directions made by the Court and ensure that parties use the correct forms and pay the correct fee.
  • To prioritise the caseload effectively in accordance with changing business demands, adapting focus as necessary to ensure that urgent and/or high-profile matters are progressed appropriately.
  • To carry out case management tasks in accordance with the directions of lawyers and the judiciary.
  • To monitor, compile and analyse case progression and performance data as required and to prepare reports.
  • To manage a busy inbox and to provide advice accurately and in timely fashion.
  • To proactively check with parties their readiness for hearings as directed.
  • To identify solutions to local problems and refer them to the line manager.
  • To be able to communicate effectively with the public, the judiciary and other court users and accurately record any conversations, emails and document received from parties on the court’s system.
  • To be able to advise court users and colleagues on procedural matters. To keep up to date with any changes to procedure.
  • To write brief notes for Judges for a variety of cases and applications
  • To support the Issue and Enquiries and Enforcement Teams with more complex queries and provide training as necessary to ensure that routine enquiries are not passed to masters, lawyers or judges.

Other Duties:

The post holder is required to work in a flexible way and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management which are commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post.

Location:

This post is based in the Royal Courts of Justice, Strand, London, WC2A 2LL. Travel to other ross the region to court sites will be required.
