Redwings is the UK’s largest horse sanctuary caring for over 1300 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. We rescue malnourished, neglected, abused and abandoned equines from all over the country, and give them a safe place to live. Redwings has three main themes; rescue and rehabilitation, specialist sanctuary care and prevention through education.

The 1300 horses, ponies, donkeys based in our sanctuaries are unlikely to ever be re-homed, they may have complex veterinary needs, sympathetic handling requirements or behavioural difficulties, which are usually due to the abuse and neglect that they have suffered. At Redwings we believe that just because an equine may have certain needs they can still have a good quality of life, which is why they are given sanctuary in a place where they can live out their days in a loving and safe environment.

However there are some residents who can be re-homed, and for them we have an expert re-homing team who take them through a very specialised re-training programme and find them the perfect Guardian home. Redwings currently has approximately 500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in Guardian homes across East Anglia, some even go on to have successful competitive careers.

Redwings is 100% publically funded and can only function due to the kindness of public donations. We are constantly astounded and amazed by the generosity of our supporters who make everything we do possible. Around two thirds of our income comes from legacies, people who have remembered us and want to invest in the future of these beautiful animals for years to come.

Our new visitor centre in Aylsham will be opening in 2012, and has been funded by the kind gifts people have left us in their wills. The development of this new site is vital as the number of abandoned equines is rapidly rising and our other sites are already at capacity. The opening of Aylsham will allow us to continue doing what we do best, providing a sanctuary for those equines in desperate need of love and care.

Every donation, however large or small, helps us to help those horses desperately in need.
