Re:On Plea
Dear Kieron

'sentenced: on plea' and 'sentenced: after trial'

When viewing a sentence the words: 'on plea' mean that the sentence was given as a result of a guilty plea as opposed to after the offender has been found guilty. This is an important factor in terms of the length of any sentence as credit is given for an early guilty plea.

In some cases, although the case has gone to trial, if the sentence given is a result of the prosecution accepting a guilty plea then we record the sentence as 'sentenced: on plea'.  Similarly, if the offender is found guilty of a lesser offence to which he had earlier offered a plea of guilty to, then we record this as a sentence 'on plea'.
