Have you looked here: GBH Section 20 maximum is 5 years imprisonment.

There are a lot of examples and it looks like the range is 1-3 years depending on the injuries caused, any similar previous convictions, age of your son and the victim and of course the early plea. Any other mitigation put forward by your barrister/solicitor will also help.

We would never recommend anyone to plead guilty to an offence that they did not commit. I would strongly suggest that before you make any decision as to plea you contact a solicitor  who will advise you as to the consequences of a guilty or not guilty plea. If there is any evidence (CCTV or witnesses) this will inform your final decision.

It sounds like you should take legal advise, so yes I'd say it's always worth getting a solicitor. You can find a list of solicitors who specialise in motoring law in the directory on this site.
