Re: charged with section 18
Your first port of call must be to speak to a good/experienced solicitor. They can talk to the prosecution about the charges and get the medical evidence to see if the charge is made out and check if S18 is the right charge in this case. For S18 to be proven, your actions (actus reus/guilty act) must have caused grievous bodily harm, which means really serious harm - bruising is not sufficient for this offence. However, it does include psychiatric injury. Another key elemnt of S18 is that you have to have intended to cause GBH see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grievous_bodily_harm and http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/s_to_u/sentencing_manual/wounding_or_inflicting_grievous_bodily_harm_with_intent/

Re: Ricky Cordell
He was sentenced for 2 counts of rape, and six other sexual offences (including sexual activity with a child, and possessing an indecent image of a child) for which he was jailed for seven years and ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for life. source: http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/8233222.Banbury_man_jailed_for_rape/

Re: Solicitor advice
It is the decision of the client and the client only as to what they are going to plead. A Solicitor can only give advice and hope they listen, so to answer your question, no they cannot.
